My Thoughts: Rihanna's Interview on 20/20

As someone who has experienced physical and verbal abuse in a relationship, I can relate to Rihanna's story.  Many women around the world can relate, so I'm very proud of her for coming out and speaking about the incident.

Here's the first ten minutes of the interview...

I applaud Rihanna for having the courage and strength to walk away...because not very many women have it in them to do that.  Many women stay in these abusive relationships hoping that someday the guy will change.  People were shocked that she even went back to Chris Brown three weeks after the incident.  I wasn't surprised because I understand the notion of "Love is blind".  It took me years to get out of the abusive relationship that I was in.  Apparently, this is very common among women who are abused.

It takes awhile to heal from an abusive relationship.  After leaving the relationship my self-esteem was very low and I didn't feel beautiful at all.

If there's one thing that I could share with young women, it's to work on loving yourself first before you get involved in a serious relationship.  When I was younger, I was looking for love in all the wrong places instead of looking within and discovering that the love was already there.
