Lately I’ve been mulling over this idea of achieving balance between inner and outer beauty. Many of us tend to focus on one over the other. When all you think about is outer beauty, you might believe that outer appearance is the basis of beauty. On the other hand, when you focus on inner beauty, you could believe that physical beauty is superficial.
Although I know in theory that your inner beauty shines through to reveal your outer beauty, it’s taken awhile for me to truly understand this. I now know that inner beauty is in the little details or actions you take - whether it’s offering a smile to a stranger, eating the right foods, wearing clothing that flatters your body, or using the right hair tools. These are all little things you can do to take care of yourself, and they add up to make you the unique person that you are.
Let’s take for example someone like Katy Perry who many young girls and women admire for her unique sense of style (myself included). I’ve never met her in person, but it seems to me that she has this balance of inner and outer beauty. As the face of ghd, a brand known for their quality flat irons and hair styling tools, we have seen Katy’s alter egos surface. She appears to be very comfortable in her own skin either portraying a 1920’s bombshell or a 70’s boho queen. When I watch Katy being interviewed, she seems very genuine and candid when sharing bits about her life. Overall, I sense that she does pay attention to details.
Finding balance between inner and outer beauty doesn’t just happen overnight. It takes some inner soul searching and discovering your own unique message that you want to share. That message could be in the form of how you dress or a mantra that you say to yourself. Having the awareness that beauty consists of both the inner and outer you is the first step, though, to becoming more authentic....the real you.
