Inner Beauty Lesson From Michael Jackson

I've been deeply saddened by the passing of Michael Jackson.  He was a soul whose purpose was to unite people through his music - and he certainly accomplished that.  However, there is one big lesson that all of us can take away from Michael Jackson's story - that not having love for yourself can be highly destructive

I'm not here to criticize or condemn Michael Jackson for what he did to himself.  I am a true fan and appreciated everything he did no matter what he looked like. It's just sad that he allowed other people's opinions of him to change how he felt about himself.

In one interview, Michael mentioned that when he was younger, he had a bad case of acne.  One time he overheard a fan say something to the effect of, "Ew, what happened to his face?" Those words hurt Michael deeply. Other people's hurtful comments coupled with pressure from his father, Joe Jackson, to perform perfectly were enough to send Michael Jackson over the edge.

Always keep in mind that you cannot please everybody.  When someone makes a comment about your appearance, realize that they're expressing their own insecurities about themselves.  Don't follow the rules or "standards" set by society on what is beautiful or what isn't beautiful.

Very well put. I have also been thinking about all of the things (that we will probably never know) that Michael may have gone through while growing up. We need to bolster ourselves to stay strong in our beliefs of ourselves, yes, and I also believe that we have an obligation to do the same for others. If you are a parent, especially, but even for other family members, friends, and co-workers- we can be the voice that lifts others up, instead of beating them down. While we are lifting others, we automatically lift ourselves and then guess what happens- your inner beauty shines so brightly that it shows up on the outside, too!
