Your Clothes Don't Define You

03Oct11

There are many people who say that fashion is not important.  How can they say that when everyone wears clothes?  Believe it or not, fashion is part of our lives and will be as long as we live here on Earth...or they change the laws and decide that we can all walk around naked if we choose to.

Clothes do serve a function.  For instance, rain coats keep us dry during the rainy season and thermals for ladies keep us warm during the winter. Clothes are also an expression of our personality and unique style.  We can tell a story or fight for a cause through our clothing.  So don't tell me that fashion is not important.

However, what fashion can't do is define who you are.  A brand or label on a piece of clothing doesn't make you superior or better than anyone else.  It will make you feel good for a little while, but those feelings can fade if you see someone else with something you believe to be cuter, prettier, or shinier than what you have.  In that case, you have allowed your clothes to define you.  Living in Southern California, I see many women who walk around in their designer label handbags and clothing thinking they're too cool, but what they end up looking like is insecure little girls hiding behind fancy clothing.

The next time you go shopping, don't pay attention to brands or labels.  Focus on buying clothing that appeals to you because it looks good on you, flatters your body, and reflects your personality.  Allow your inner beauty to define who you are.
