What is beauty?

I find it interesting that the standard of beauty is still "tall and skinny". Fashion designers continue to try and perpetuate this standard by hiring skinny women for their fashion shows and photo shoots. If you wear plus size clothing, you usually have to shop in a specialty store, and as my friend has exclaimed on more than one occasion, "I can't find anything cute in those stores!" On a side note, nowadays there are plenty of plus size clothing stores online that do carry very cute styles.

Yes, I could blame the fashion industry for continuing to expose us to images of thin, young, air-brushed models. After all, those magazines are right in your face every time you pay for something at the grocery store. However, it's up to each and every one of us not to continue buying those magazines. Keep reminding yourself that these images are just illusions.

Taking Care of Your Inner Beauty Is Like Taking Care of Your Hair

Every year around my birthday I get a new haircut. I typically don’t do anything out of the ordinary, although I should follow my own advice and be a little daring every once in awhile. This year I had about 3 inches cut off with layers. Nothing fancy, but it did make me smile :)

There’s something about a haircut that, for me, symbolizes “new beginnings” and a fresh, new me. Perhaps this idea began years ago after I had broken up with an ex-boyfriend and decided to completely chop off 90% of my hair. Unless a hair stylist completely messes up, women usually feel good about themselves after a new haircut, right? We invest in our hair - both financially and emotionally - and for good reason. Lately I’ve been mulling over this idea of achieving balance between inner and outer beauty. Many of us tend to focus on one over the other. When all you think about is outer beauty, you might believe that outer appearance is the basis of beauty. On the other hand, when you focus on inner beauty, you could believe that physical beauty is superficial.

Although I know in theory that your inner beauty shines through to reveal your outer beauty, it’s taken awhile for me to truly understand this. I now know that inner beauty is in the little details or actions you take - whether it’s offering a smile to a stranger, eating the right foods, wearing clothing that flatters your body, or using the right hair tools. These are all little things you can do to take care of yourself, and they add up to make you the unique person that you are. Read more...

Is it right to criticize someone else's sense of fashion or beauty?

This is the question that came to mind as I saw this picture of Kelly Osbourne taken at Art of Elysium's 5th Annual Heaven Gala in Los Angeles. Obviously Kelly thought she looked great when she decided to put on this dress and dye her hair grey. Or perhaps she was influenced by someone who encouraged her to try out this look. We are often kind and offer positive words to others, but when was the last time you looked in the mirror and spoke kind words to yourself? Create a habit of telling yourself, "I love you", every morning as you're getting ready for the day.

There are many people who say that fashion is not important. How can they say that when everyone wears clothes? Believe it or not, fashion is part of our lives and will be as long as we live here on Earth...or they change the laws and decide that we can all walk around naked if we choose to.

Clothes do serve a function. For instance, rain coats keep us dry during the rainy season and thermals for ladies keep us warm during the winter.
